DS Smith and SOMFY

DS Smith and home and building equipment company SOMFY have collaborated on a fully recyclable corrugated cardboard solution to protect roller shutter motors during transportation and replace polystyrene inserts.

DS Smith’s design teams in Kunheim worked with SOMFY to replace plastic and improve recyclability without compromising on product protection during storage and transport. Cardboard inserts made from Kraft EE (Electrical Grade) corrugated board are said to guarantee robustness and durability.

Apparently, the modular system can accommodate thirty-four different types of engine lengths and can be adapted to four box sizes, making logistics easier. The assembly process is designed to meet industrial production rates and requirements.

The companies add that compared to Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), the compactness of the cardboard delivers a ‘significant reduction’ in storage volume, saving space at logistics sites. Following a successful trial order, the project is currently in its operational phase.

In similar news, DS Smith recently teamed up with Elvial to introduce its fibre-based Fanfold packaging to customers across Greece’s industrial sector, designed to protect heavy aluminium products during transport. The solution has an accordion-style structure to allow for the folding and adjustment of sizes and aims to provide robust and versatile protection for international freight.

Mondi recently reported that it has achieved a 42% reduction in unit packaging costs with its protective packaging for online marketplace Ovoko’s car bumpers. Designed to be simple to assemble and improve product protection, Mondi adapted a heavy-duty solution from its automotive portfolio for the bumpers.
