Berry Global has collaborated with men’s skincare brand true to launch a refillable deodorant in Poland, estimated to reduce carbon emissions by around 53% compared to single-use deodorant.
The deodorant sticks are available in 200 Douglas Perfumery stores, airport duty free concessions, and on true’s online store. The refill system consists of a removable 75ml refill pack made of recyclable PP that needs to be replaced approximately every three months.
Berry says that eliminating the need to replace the entire deodorant stick is estimated to reduce the plastic packaging’s carbon emissions by around 53% compared to single-use deodorant and remove approximately 64% of the plastic used for the deodorant packaging. The company adds that its calculations (using SPICE analysis and Ecoinvent datasets) show a potential of 51% reduced environmental impact when comparing the initial packaging with the refill packaging.
True says the refill pack was an opportunity to bring the first refill antiperspirant to the Polish market. It adds that the pack encourages reuse of the dispenser and significantly reduces true’s environmental footprint, as only the refill pack is required to be replaced – on average, once every three months – allowing the skincare brand to introduce new formulas and decorations to suit changes in market demand.
Launched in Spring 2023, managing director Maciej Adamaszek states that the concept became popular with consumers after true’s sponsorship of the Ironman Poland competition. “Athletes from more than 100 nations travel to Poland to compete, and all of them received the antiperspirant in their gift pack,” said Mr Adamaszek. “Three months later, we started to receive orders from around the world, which proves contestants have been using the product!”
“We are dedicated to delivering innovative, refillable packaging solutions for our customers to help meet the growing sustainability demands of today and tomorrow,” said Ewelina Cackowska, sales manager at Berry Global. “Collaborations such as these allow us to give plastics multiple lives so we can foster cleaner communities for generations to come.”
In July, Berry partnered with French cosmetics company La Rosée to co-develop a refillable stick for its déodorant product, said to offer a weight reduction of 62% compared to a full stick. The company says the deodorant is made from 99% natural ingredients and its formula complies with a strict formulation specification that includes no aluminium salts or alcohol.
Earlier this month, the company introduced its “fully recyclable” alternative to coloured PET pill bottles for healthcare applications, said to have a reduction of approximately 71% in CO2 emissions. The new bottle has reportedly achieved a RecyClass A certification for its recyclability in countries with the appropriate recycling infrastructure in place, when combined with Berry’s PP closures.
