
Alcoa, Ball and Unilever have partnered to pilot the first use of Elysis carbon-free smelting technology in personal care and home care packaging, said to eliminate direct greenhouse gas emissions and generate oxygen in place of CO2.
The technology is being utilized in an aerosol can made with 50% Elysis primary aluminium and 50% post-consumer recycled content, apparently representing ‘one of the lowest-carbon packaging solutions’ of its kind. The companies say this initiative demonstrates alignment with global decarbonization goals and growing consumer demand for more sustainable products.
“Through this collaboration with Ball and Unilever, we’re helping bring low-carbon aluminium into everyday products and demonstrating how innovation at the material level can deliver tangible sustainability benefits,” said Renato Bacchi, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Alcoa. “We are proud to collaborate across the aluminium value chain to reduce carbon footprints and create real impact in people’s daily lives.”
This summer, beauty and wellness company Nu Skin relaunched its ageLOC Tru Face line with packaging designed to cut down on waste, lower carbon emissions and utilize recycled materials. Nu Skin anticipates that by the end of 2025 its refill packaging systems will save 257.5 tonnes of glass and plastic while also eliminating 572 tonnes of emissions each year, compared to its previous single-use glass packaging.
Also in personal care, Henkel brand Fa updated its portfolio featuring shower gels with 100% recycled plastic, designed for recycling, and deodorants with 50% recycled aluminium content. Fa adds that the new design highlights its signature water wave element to emphasize refreshment.
