With this year’s Sustainability Awards fast approaching, we hear from finalist Xampla about its entry in the Commercialized E-Commerce category – the ‘world’s first’ corrugated takeaway box using Xampla’s plant-based barrier coating, said to be biodegradable and home compostable.
You’re a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2025. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarize your entry, in less than 50 words?
Xampla’s entry celebrates our partnership with Just Eat Takeaway.com and Huhtamaki to launch the world’s first corrugated takeaway box in-market using Xampla’s innovative Morro Coating; a breakthrough, plastic-free natural barrier coating that is fully biodegradable, home compostable, and compatible with standard recycling processes.
Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about what is innovative about your project and/or about its impact on packaging sustainability.
This represents a genuine industry first; the world’s first corrugated takeaway box using Xampla’s Morro Coating, made from plants. Our innovation replaces traditional plastic and PFAS coatings with a natural barrier that delivers excellent grease, water, and oxygen protection for a variety of dishes including hot hold, while being fully biodegradable and home compostable.
What makes this truly groundbreaking is the seamless collaboration across the entire value chain. Morro Coating works as a drop-in solution, enabling rapid scale-up through established manufacturing processes. Unlike conventional coatings containing hidden plastics and harmful forever chemicals that complicate recycling, Morro Coating is compatible with existing recycling processes.
This project demonstrates how innovative partnerships can deliver both environmental impact and commercial viability, paving the way for industry-wide transformation towards the future of plastic-free packaging.
Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, e.g. how your innovation/initiative has been received by the industry, or what the next steps are in commercialization/product development?
Xampla’s partnership with Huhtamaki continues to flourish. In June, we won Gold at the Environmental Packaging Live Awards and now we have secured an exclusive distribution agreement for this premium packaging range with Bunzl Catering Supplies until October.
This exciting new partnership offers Bunzl’s established and vast multi-million pound network the opportunity to act on their wider sustainability and packaging goals.
The market response has been incredibly positive, with one of the Just Eat Takeaway.com Lieferando restaurant partners noting: “We see that the demand for environmentally friendly packaging is constantly increasing. The new boxes expand our options for packaging a wider range of dishes plastic-free.”
Xampla looks forward to helping more brands and businesses navigating consumer demand and regulatory pressures for plastic-free. Together we can choose plants, not plastic.
The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2025 will be announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place in Utrecht on 10-12 November. The Summit mobilizes leaders of the FMCG value chain, policymakers, NGOs, recyclers and investors to collaborate, remove barriers and identify opportunities on the road to sustainable transformation.
