Heidelberg and Solenis have announced a collaboration aiming to develop a cost-effective process to integrate barrier coatings for fibre-based packaging directly into the roll-fed flexo printing process, using Heidelberg’s Boardmaster printing press.
The collaboration hopes to coordinate the individual components of the Boardmaster, the chemical composition of Solenis’ barrier coatings and the entire process technology and make them available to packaging producers. The partnership is also set to reduce the use of plastics through ‘environmentally friendly’ alternatives with improved barrier functionality.
The companies state that the overall package should enable customers to expand their range of applications in the flexible paper sector with improved barrier functions, resulting in cost-optimized applications that are predominantly reusable, recyclable, renewable and compostable.
“The growing global demand for sustainably produced, cost-effective, recyclable and compostable packaging makes the flexible paper sector an attractive growth market for us,” says Dr. David Schmedding, chief technology & sales officer at Heidelberg. “Our new Boardmaster web flexo printing machine, with its production speed of up to 600 meters per minute and an availability of up to 90 percent, offers the ideal conditions for this. In our collaboration with Solenis, we are aiming for the cost-effective production of packaging solutions for the food industry that are geared towards efficiency and sustainability.”
Heidelberg will be exhibiting at FACHPACK 2024, taking place from September 24th-26th in Nuremberg, Germany, in Hall 4 / stand number 4-246.
In May, Heidelberg launched its Jetfire range for industrial digital commercial printing, which utilizes Canon’s inkjet technology and aims to combine offset and digital printing into a single end-to-end system. Heidelberg plans to release the Jetfire 75, an inkjet digital printing press in B2 format for commercial printing from mid-2025, with the first shipments projected for early 2026.
BEUMER Group will also be at FACHPACK displaying its ‘maintenance-friendly’ stretch hood technology, said to be compatible with films containing recycled content and targeting improved safety, efficiency, and ergonomic performance. The BEUMER stretch hood A packaging machine reportedly lowers both film consumption and packaging costs due to utilizing ‘thinner yet higher-performance’ types of film.
