ExxonMobil Signature Polymers has partnered with XL Recycling to develop high-performance stretch and shrink hood films containing post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, in response to growing consumer demand and evolving regulations including the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which requires 35% PCR in industrial packaging by 2030.

The two companies have created thin films with 35% PCR content for stretch hood applications and 50% for shrink hood, said to deliver quality and capabilities on par with virgin films. XL Recycling’s PCR resins were blended with ExxonMobil’s Exceed Tough+, Exceed Stiff+, Exceed Flow and Vistamaxx performance polymers in three-layer structures, preserving the mechanical, optical, and processing properties customers expect.

Key features of the new films include ‘excellent’ puncture and tear resistance to protect products during storage and transport; low haze for product visibility and brand presentation; and high holding force and pallet security throughout distribution.

In March, ExxonMobil teamed up with Plastilene and Reciclene to create collation shrink films with post-consumer recycled content, claiming to reinforce their strength and durability with its polyethylene polymer. Apparently, the polyethylene helps the final films maintain their mechanical properties, providing high holding force to support the implementation of PCR.

More recently, RKW Group introduced PE films with an integrated EVOH barrier into its RKW Horizon range, based on MDO technology and said to offer ‘a recyclable, sustainable solution’ when combined with RKW’s ProTec sealing films. The MDO-PE films can be used for packaging formats including stand-up pouches, side gusset bags, flow packs, sachets and lidding films.
