A pack produced by Berry Global for Norwegian ice cream manufacturer Diplom-Is’s Royal brand has won the International Ice Cream Consortium (IICC) award for best packaging solution.
Apparently, key factors in the decision included the introduction of a new non-carbon black colour to improve recyclability and design adjustments to improve efficiency and reduce waste during production. Through its collaboration with Berry, Diplom-Is claims it has pioneered the use of the non-carbon black, making the plastic containers for Royal ice cream easier to recycle for the first time.
During this year’s Wimbledon Championships, CLUBZERØ and Barclays partnered to serve ice cream in returnable pots, aiming to cut down on single-use waste as attendees wait to enter the Grounds. Provided in the Game, Seat, Match Area, the pots were designed in-house to withstand temperature, remain durable, and achieve customer satisfaction.
In the same month, BOPP films producer Innovia Films revealed its new white ‘ultra-low density’ film specifically engineered for ice cream flow wrap packaging. The new film grade was developed, trialled and launched at the Innovia Films site in Płock, Poland. Under suitable storage conditions, the company says the film can be stored for a period of 6 months without any risk of deterioration.
Packaging paper manufacturer Sappi Europe introduced three new products to its barrier paper portfolio in August, for use in both food and non-food packaging applications and the confectionary market. The new papers included Guard ICC flexible packaging paper for ice cream cones and Guard Twist Gloss, a glossy, recyclable wax free barrier paper for twisting applications in the confectionary market.
