With the aim of providing an alternative to LDPE coatings, DSM has announced a portfolio of reworkable and repulpable barrier coating resins for packaging.
The company says its new dispersion coating resins are aimed at producers of paperboard packaging for consumer foods who want to continue delivering durable, high-functioning, and reliable primer coatings, inks, and top coatings.
At the end of their useful first life, DSM reports that packaging and stock coated with these resins can be repulped without the need for any extra processing.
Each resin has been designed to be suitable for various applications and be resistant to water, grease, and oil while also being compliant with food contact regulations.
In addition, the resins apparently offer the ability to be applied using existing coating equipment, while ensuring decreased production waste and scrap costs in comparison with PE lamination, due to the waste and scrap they produce being readily recyclable and suitable for repulping.
