Event Overview

Our value chain has been using intrinsically circular food grade polystyrene (PS) with a low carbon footprint and has been scaling-up multiple recycling technologies. The next step is navigating the new EU Regulation 2022/1616 on recycled plastic food contact materials and articles (FCM), which entered into force last October. It permits the use of PS recycled with so-called novel technologies as FCM, e.g. in food packaging – as soon as and as long as certain conditions are met.

Our online event will discuss how recycled polystyrene (rPS) can be safely used as FCM behind a functional barrier and in direct food contact under this EU Regulation.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • Where does the styrenics value chain stand today in terms of its circularity mission? What has been and needs to be done to further scale-up the use of food grade rPS?
  • What are the options available under EU law to use rPS as FCM in packaging, also beyond ‘novel technologies’?
  • How do scientific studies confirm the safe use of mechanically recycled PS in direct food contact and behind a functional barrier?
  • What do the novel technology notifications for rPS signify for the value chain?
