As part of our Finalist Interview series ahead of the Sustainability Awards, we spoke to Mondelēz International about its mono-paper packaging for LU’s Véritable Petit Beurre, aiming to reduce virgin plastic use and nominated in the Commercialized Recyclable Packaging category.
You’re a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2025. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarize your entry, in less than 50 words?
By using this innovative mono-paper packaging for LU’s ‘Véritable Petit Beurre’, Mondelēz International reduces virgin plastic usage by 63% per pack in France, Belgium and the UK. These products feature new outer paper packaging, designed to be recycled and FSC certified.
As a result of 3 years of R&D work - in collaboration with Saica Flex - we created a mono-paper structure for secondary packaging, this technical achievement feat ensures recycling without compromising the freshness and quality of the products.
Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about what is innovative about your project and/or about its impact on packaging sustainability.
The new mono paper packaging is designed for recycling in the paper waste stream in Europe and has been produced with FSC certified paper and cold sealing functionality. The recyclability of this paper packaging has been tested positively following the CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries) Recyclability Test Method version 2. It is not laminated and does not contain plastic material.
Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, e.g. how your innovation/initiative has been received by the industry, or what the next steps are in commercialization/product development?
This innovation has resonated strongly with our stakeholders internally and externally, as it aligns with growing consumer expectations around sustainability. We have received strong recognition, with already 4 awards from industrial and retailer’ organizations in France, as well as valuable media visibility.
We’re now focused on scaling the solution across more references and continuing to explore new materials and formats in the future, aligned with our Sustainability strategy at Mondelez International.
The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2025 will be announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place in Utrecht on 10-12 November. The Summit mobilizes leaders of the FMCG value chain, policymakers, NGOs, recyclers and investors to collaborate, remove barriers and identify opportunities on the road to sustainable transformation.
