In this edition of the Spotlight, Zellcheming provides a rundown of its upcoming ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2023 trade fair, with events ranging from sessions covering artificial intelligence and augmented reality in the paper, cellulose, and fibre-based sectors to the Women4Paper meeting featuring female industry representatives.

With the publication of the program and the activation of the ticket store, ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH is on the home stretch for Expo 2023, which will once again be held as a hybrid event at the RheinMain CongressCenter (RMCC) in Wiesbaden, Germany, from June 20 to 22.

The ZELLCHEMING-Expo is the annual event highlight for the paper, cellulose, and fibre-based industries. The tradition-steeped trade show is affiliated with the annual general meeting of the ZELLCHEMING association. The Association of Pulp and Paper Chemists and Engineers was founded in Berlin in 1905, making it the world’s oldest technical/scientific association in this industry. It is a platform for the professional technical exchange of all those involved in the development of sustainable paper- and fibre-based products and a link between science and the manufacturing processes and their marketing.

Practice-relevant program items offer visitors the opportunity to obtain specific information and further training on individual topics and application areas. Presentations will address current approaches of the paper and cellulose fibre-based industry on the way to a climate-friendly bioeconomy and will be dedicated to initiatives and lighthouse projects. Exhibitors are involved via best practice applications and the latest technologies for process and product innovation.

Kicking off the congress on the first day of the fair, Prof. Dr. Helga Zollner-Croll, vice chair of the association, will moderate the lecture session ‘Innovative energy concepts in the paper and fibre-based industry’: “The topic has continued to gain significant momentum at all levels, political, operational and social, and I look forward to valuable contributions to the discussion that will shed light on the various perspectives.”

Another program highlight will be presented by ZELLCHEMING’s Technical Committee DATA in the session “Digitalization - Artificial Intelligence”. Speakers include Rosario Othen from RWTH Aachen University and Christin Joachim from Papier- und Kartonfabrik Varel, who will report on ‘Data hackathons for and with students - added value for everyone’, thus taking the perspective of the younger generation. Olav Dau from Bellmer, together with Matthias Schmitt, representing Voith Digital, will report on the use of ‘Augmented Reality in the paper industry’ and look at the ideas of the supplier industry. The circle closes with Dr. Michael Hunold from Steinbeis, who, together with Dr. Philip Gerstner from Felix Schoeller and Dr. Jörg Padberg from Koehler Paper, will report from the field.

“This block of lectures exemplifies the strengths of ZELLCHEMING and proves that we cultivate and promote the exchange of all participants, science, suppliers, manufacturers, and young talent in a subject-oriented and topic-related manner!”, explains Dr. Ernst-Ulrich Wittmann, the association’s chair.

On the second day of the trade show, the Women4Paper meeting, which is especially aimed at women in the pulp and paper industry, is also a highlight. The network now has more than 300 female representatives from the industry. The first three tandems of the Women4Paper mentoring program, which was launched in 2022 and is now entering its second season, will report on their experiences on the third day of the trade show and are thus perfectly integrated into the ZELLCHEMING career day. The new focus topic will enable companies in the sector to present career opportunities in their operations and make direct contact with potential young employees.

“In this way, we are increasing the attractiveness of the third day of the trade fair, reaching another visitor target group, and ending the Expo with an exclamation mark. After all, this is a topic that will determine the future viability of this industry!”, says Petra Hanke, Managing Director, ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH.
