From wet, salty air to high contamination potential resulting from external influences: In the food industry, products are packed and prepared for transport in tough conditions. Yet all processes need to meet the highest standards when it comes to hygiene and speed.

Mosca GmbH is presenting the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-VA, a new stainless-steel strapping machine that fully meets these requirements, at Anuga Foodtec 2018 (Stand B-080-B-088, Hall 07.1). The Mosca "Aquarium" demonstrates how the Standard 6 sealing unit, the heart of Mosca machines, works reliably under wet conditions. Other machines on display with Mosca-engineered feeding mechanisms demonstrate how the manufacturer's fully-automated solutions can be integrated into production lines.

Taking place every three years, Anuga Foodtec is a meeting place for the food and beverage industry that brings together all of the different production segments. Mosca is presenting strapping technology as a form of transport security that not only reliably encloses boxes, pallets and cartons, but also stabilizes them with strap tensioning. For the first time, the company is showcasing a corrosion-resistant EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-VA, one of the Mosca stainless-steel machines designed specifically for the food industry. "When it comes to packing food safely and hygienically under adverse conditions, every step of the packaging process has to meet the highest standards," explains Mosca CEO Timo Mosca. "When a strapping machine is used aboard a trawler to securely package fresh fish, it has to withstand aggressive saltwater and operate flawlessly at high speed. Our stainless-steel machines offer customers maximum reliability, hygiene, and product protection, even under less-than-ideal environmental conditions."

EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-VA: Reliable and corrosion-resistant

The Mosca EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-VA offers several advantages for strapping packages containing fresh fish, meat, and other food products. This is the first stainless-steel, side-seal machine equipped with the patented SoniXs ultrasonic sealing unit with electronic self-calibration. Particles cannot drop on the sealing unit because it is placed to the side of the strap guide frame and the strapped product. This avoids contaminants that could affect machine performance. With ultrasonic technology, there is no need to thermally melt the strapping material for a secure closure. This keeps plastic residue from forming on the sealing unit and eliminates vapors or toxins. It also prevents polystyrene beads from sticking to the sealing unit when strapping styrofoam boxes.

High-quality stainless steel is another key factor for reliable machine performance. "We use the highest economically-viable stainless-steel quality in all parts of the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-VA," Timo Mosca explains. "This keeps the strapping machine corrosion-resistant under the toughest conditions." The Mosca "Aquarium" at the company's Anuga Foodtec booth shows how the stainless-steel SoniXs ultrasonic sealing unit is unaffected by external conditions. The demonstration unit is fully exposed to water, yet continues to work flawlessly.

The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-VA is designed for use in production lines. Mosca also offers a matching corrosion-resistant feeding mechanism with plastic chain links in a stainless-steel frame. The machine is controlled using an intuitively-operated panel. Up to 52 strapping cycles per minute are possible with the entry-level model. The optional double strap dispenser helps to ensure smooth operation. Two coils are inserted into the strapping machine at the same time. When the end of one coil is reached, the machine automatically switches over to the second coil. This reduces the time required to change the coil by around 80 percent and eliminates the need to have an operator on site to handle the coil change.

Food strapping experts

The EVOLUTION SoniXs MP-6 T-VA and EVOLUTION MP-6 R-VA on display at the Mosca booth make a big impression thanks to corrosion-resistant components, easy handling, and versatile operation. While the operator manually inserts packages into the EVOLUTION SoniXs MP-6 T-VA table model, the EVOLUTION SoniXs MP-6 R-VA is suitable for fully-automated production lines. Both models feature the SoniXs Standard 6 sealing unit. The infinitely adjustable control panel enables users to operate the machine from either side. Strap coils can also be inserted from the front or the side – which makes the machine ideal for tight spaces. The EVOLUTION SoniXs MP-6 R-VA straps up to 35 times per minute. Maximum performance for the EVOLUTION SoniXs MP-6 T-VA is 50 strapping cycles per minute. When the workload slows down, the operator can switch either machine to eco-speed.

For variable product heights

Mosca developed the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H as the first horizontal strapping machine with the SoniXs ultrasonic sealing unit designed especially for frequently changing strapping patterns. Thanks to the horizontal frame moving up and down, it safely and variably straps high and bulky products. The MS-6-H horizontal frame can also move sideways, which eliminates the need to perfectly align products with a reference edge. Programmable product sizes and strapping positions give operators more flexibility. The machines can be integrated into fully automated lines thanks to Mosca conveying technnology, open data interfaces, and potential-free contacts. Mosca thus offers the right solution for bulky and heavy packages or pallets.
