Honeywell today announced the availability of its Aclar® films to help support Latin America’s pharmaceutical industry and its growing demand for product packaging that increases shelf life while protecting drug products, lowering packaging costs and improving profitability.

According to Americas Market Intelligence, a market research and management consulting firm, the Latin America pharmaceutical market is estimated to grow steadily from 2016 to 2024, and will rise from a value of USD $127.9 million to USD $286.2 million during this period. This is due primarily to the increasing affordability of health and wellness products, as well as a growing societal emphasis on physical fitness and well-being.

“Latin America is one of the fastest-growing pharmaceutical markets in the world,” said Francisco Márquez, General Manager for Latin America, Honeywell Advanced Materials. “As a result, the pharma industry is seeking new technologies to meet the needs of its customers, while also reducing operational costs. Honeywell is committed to supporting this market growth by ensuring a robust supply and capacity of Aclar films for the regions’ pharma companies.”

In pharmaceutical packaging solutions, Aclar films allow potential package size reductions of up to 55 percent, compared with packages made of cold-formed foil. This smaller pack size enables gains in productivity and operational flexibility, as well as reductions in raw material usage, warehousing expenses and transportation costs. The increased design flexibility gives pharmaceutical companies more options in meeting the needs of users with regard to portability, ease of opening, and visual confirmation of content. Available in many thickness grades and a wide range of moisture barriers, Aclar provides flexibility to optimize moisture protection across different climate conditions, a useful feature for the varied climate conditions across Latin America.

Aclar films are based on polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) fluoropolymer technology. They are crystal clear, biochemically inert, chemical-resistant, nonflammable, and plasticizer- and stabilizer-free. The films can facilitate increased patient compliance with doctor prescriptions with see-through, portable and patient-friendly pack presentations. Today, Aclar thermoformable films are used in a broad range of markets including originator and generic pharmaceutical, over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical and animal health packaging.
