In this edition of the Spotlight, LEIPA Flexibles outlines its packaging solutions for paper and plastic streams, including its use of monolaminates and the company’s eBeam flexo printing technology.
At LEIPA Flexibles, our packaging solutions are driven by a strong sense of purpose. Inspired by Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle theory, we believe that knowing “why” we do what we do is key to success. For us, our “why” is simple: to create packaging that respects the environment, the people who use it, and the products it protects. This purpose shapes every aspect of our business, from how we innovate to the sustainable solutions we deliver.
What we sell: sustainable packaging for a circular economy
LEIPA Flexibles provides sustainable packaging solutions through two main streams: paper and plastic.
Paper stream:
Our close collaboration with our sister company, which recycles about 10% of all paper waste in Germany, gives us valuable insights into the recycling process. This allows us to design paper-based packaging that is easily recyclable and supports a closed-loop system.
Our solutions are optimized to re-enter the production cycle with minimal waste and contamination. One of our paper-based packaging solutions with moisture and oxygen barriers is LEIPAbarrier ECO, which has already revolutionized the packaging of dried food, confectionery, and chocolate by replacing non-recyclable laminates composed of aluminium foil, plastic and paper. Its latest achievement is its application in frozen products.
Plastic stream:
For plastics, we focus on recyclable monolaminates made from polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Unlike traditional multi-layer laminates, our monolaminates are designed for easy recyclability, yielding better results in the recycling process. We have also partially eliminated adhesives and unnecessary materials to simplify recycling and reduce environmental impact. LEIPAfilm ECO can be offered with different barriers according to the product needs.
How we sell: innovation for recyclability
At LEIPA Flexibles, we base our packaging designs on the concept of circularity - keeping materials in use and minimizing waste. With the expertise gained from our recycling operations, we constantly improve the recyclability of both our paper and plastic solutions.
In the plastic stream, our monolaminates reduce material complexity and waste, offering both efficient and eco-friendly packaging.
In the paper stream, our solutions seamlessly fit into recycling systems, maintaining high-quality wastepaper yields and supporting the sustainable paper cycle.
Our eBeam flexo printing technology is a major breakthrough in the industry. This process uses electron beams to cure inks instead of traditional solvents, drastically reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. It also eliminates the need for energy-intensive drying ovens, lowering energy consumption. Water-based inks further minimize ink usage without sacrificing performance, making the entire process more sustainable while still delivering top-tier print quality and durability.
Why we sell it: packaging with purpose
Our mission is simple: to create packaging that respects the planet, the people who use it, and the products it protects. Packaging plays a vital role in sustainability, and we are dedicated to reducing its environmental impact by offering solutions that promote recycling and circularity.
Through our innovative paper and plastic packaging, we help clients meet their sustainability targets. Our focus on recyclable materials, adhesive-free laminates (where possible) and eco-friendly technologies like eBeam flexo ensures that we provide solutions that reduce waste and environmental harm.
Our commitment to the future
For nearly 60 years, LEIPA Flexibles has been committed to create, pack, and protect goods. As the global demand for sustainable and convenient packaging grows, we remain focused on providing solutions that not only meet functional needs but also support a circular economy. This commitment drives our innovation, ensuring we offer high-quality, flexible packaging that benefits not only the product but also the people and the planet.
