Xact Prepack has partnered with Termoformas to create plastic punnets and trays for the food industry with a minimum of 80% recycled content, designed for applications including meat and fresh produce.

Xact Prepack says the new range of solutions has a minimum of 80% recycled content, meaning the products are not applicable for plastic tax. This apparently reduces reliance on virgin plastics, minimizes waste and delivers cost savings.

The products are designed for a variety of food applications including fresh produce, meat, and fish, manufactured by Termoformas at its facility in Alicante, Spain. In addition to its standard range, Termoformas offers a bespoke service allowing retailers to create tailored packaging solutions based on their specific needs.

Commenting on the partnership, Paul Bennion, director at Xact Prepack, said: “This partnership with Termoformas is part of our ongoing commitment to providing packaging solutions that meet the needs of our customers and the planet. With growing concerns about plastic waste and its impact on the environment, coupled with the introduction of the UK plastic tax, businesses are actively seeking sustainable alternatives. Our new solutions address both of these concerns.”

At the end of last year, AIMPLAS collaborated with Covinil and Eroski to develop a 100% recyclable flexible skin pack packaging using recycled PET. The research project is funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the European Union through Next Generation funds within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

Last month Tesco and Hilton Foods announced plans to package the retailer’s own-brand minced beef product in Klöckner Pentaplast (kp)’s ‘first-ever’ 100% rPET food trays made from recovered tray material, hoping to help unlock full circularity for food packaging. kp is piloting the trays for the Tesco’s Finest minced beef product and sealing the tray with the kp FlexiLid barrier film, which contains 30% post-consumer recycled content.
