After teaming up with Smurfit Westrock, Poppin Candy is distributing its products in bespoke printed, ‘pizza-style’ postal boxes designed to capture the eye on social media.
When it began shipping its products internationally, Poppin Candy sought to replace its plain white postal boxes with a new design that showcased its branding. It envisioned a custom pizza-style box with colourful and detailed decoration and an easy-to-open design.
The design experts at Smurfit Westrock Chesterfield worked to appeal to Poppin Candy’s target audience in line with its viral popularity on TikTok. They set their sights on a ‘fun’ and ‘dynamic’ pack that harmonized its colours with the candy’s branding while unlocking an ‘unmatched’ unboxing experience for consumers to share on social media.
The initial design saw the Poppin Candy logo ‘cascade’ over the sides of the box, which called for a precise print to achieve a seamless wrap-around effect. By shrinking the logo and preventing the lettering from feeding off the edges, the team sought to ensure its legibility and visual impact.
Now the brand name is displayed in the centre of the flat box face, with the logo’s lightning bolt illustration matching at the edges. With 87% of consumers said to base their spending decisions on social media and 55% of smartphone users buying a product after seeing it online, Smurfit Westrock hopes the new packaging will stand out on screens.
It is also intended to build anticipation and excitement for consumers ordering a Mystery Box, in which the contents of the pack are a surprise, and boost Poppin Candy’s presence in the confectionary market.
Olivia Cancellara, lead graphic designer at Poppin Candy, commented: “We are really pleased with the candy packaging that Smurfit Westrock Chesterfield created for us and we had a great time collaborating on the design with the team at Smurfit. They took our requirements on board and created delivery boxes that are branded, protective and affordable. They even found a solution to the challenge of printing our logo and branded colours perfectly on every box.”
“Working on this project has been an incredible experience,” adds Ben Skelton, business development manager from Smurfit Westrock. “We are thrilled with the results and look forward to many more successful collaborations with Poppin Candy in the future.”
Any customers in need of custom confectionary or e-commerce packaging for their edible products are invited to contact Smurfit Westrock via its website.
Another redesign from Smurfit Westrock sought to create eye-catching, ‘shelf-ready’ beer boxes for Woodforde’s. The new packaging intends to stand out to consumers on a supermarket shelf, encourage repeated purchases, and implement moisture resistance to prevent condensation from damaging the display.
Brandon Consultants has undertaken a similar project with a ‘bold new look’ for Paulig Coffee’s Mundo range. Its ‘vibrant’ colourways and visuals vary to reflect each flavour’s regional inspirations and aim to reflect Paulig’s commitment to ethical sourcing.
Additionally, Nestlé has included personalized Quality Street pouches among its limited-edition packaging lineup for Christmas 2024. Among its variety of on-pack phrases are ‘Quality Christmas’ and ‘You’re my fave Street’.
