Metsa Board and Hej Buddy 18.10.24

Using its white kraftliner, Metsä Board has developed a multipurpose corrugated solution for Finnish cosmetics brand HejBuddy, aiming to provide flexibility and save space.

The new packaging is said to be 50% lighter than a traditional rigid box made of recycled fibres. The company states that rigid boxes are traditionally imported from Asia as assembled packaging, which requires a lot of container space.

Metsä Board says its solution requires minimal storage capacity as it can be easily folded into a box when necessary. Once the packaging has been used, it can be unfolded and recycled easily.

Focusing on seasonal adaptability, the packaging includes a sleeve that can be customized for different branding needs, seeking to provide a versatile and cost-efficient solution for brand owners. Apparently, the micro-flute boxes allow for greater flexibility as local production can be done in smaller batches.

“We wanted eye-catching packaging produced with the environment in mind,” says Niina Tuominen, founder of the HejBuddy brand. “Nature is an important value for our company, and I’m a forest owner myself. It was important that our partner shared our values, and Metsä Board’s sustainable approach made them the perfect fit.”

In April, Metsä Board unveiled its upgraded folding boxboard machine at its integrated board and pulp mill in Husum, Sweden, reported to run with 98% renewable energy and offer an increased annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes. In 2023, a €230 million investment was completed to boost the mill’s capacity, reportedly making it ‘the largest and most modern of its kind’ and increasing the warehouse capacity at the port.

We recently interviewed RWTH Aachen University as part of our Finalist Interview series ahead of the Sustainability Awards, due to its joint entry with Universität Siegen, LEIPA, PROPAKMA, STADLER and TOMRA Recycling for the EnEWA research project - which developed and evaluated a recycling process for paper, board and paper composites. Nominated in the Commercialized Driving the Circular Economy category, the project’s recycling process hopes to achieve increased recycling rates and sustainably improve the environmental impact of paper production.
