An international working group facilitated by PreZero and Packaging Cockpit, focused on implementing short-term uniform industry standards for packaging data, met for the first time last week.
Initially aiming to develop standards for Germany and Austria, the group hopes these first standards will help pave the way for directive-compliant and efficient reporting on the sustainability requirements of packaging throughout Europe. According to PreZero, cross-company retail representatives including those from SPAR and the Schwarz Group companies will come together to define workstreams and technical details. Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA) is also taking part.
PreZero states that in light of the imminent upheaval in the packaging market digital standardization is essential, with supermarkets and retail chains faced with the problem that a lot of packaging data is incomplete, non-transparent and not standardized. The company says this makes it difficult to analyze, manage and comply with packaging reporting requirements.
Last year, PreZero partnered with Packaging Cockpit to create a web-based, free solution for its online Sustainable Packaging Optimization Tool (SPOT), designed to help packaging manufacturers and distributors save resources, cut down on packaging waste, and optimize their sustainable packaging designs by evaluating their own product portfolios. In addition to material and design, the tool reportedly considers the disposal structures of all EU countries when evaluating the recyclability of packaging, making the differences between countries visible and comparable.
PreZero adds that the more complex the packaging portfolio, the more important it becomes to network an analysis and reporting tool for packaging with the existing ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) or PIM (Product Information Management) system. Apparently, the software solution from Packaging Cockpit can be adapted to companies’ specific requirements, examining which adaptations are necessary and where standardization could contribute to greater efficiency throughout the value chain.
PreZero also collaborated with Debatin last year on a new packaging solution containing 60% PCR material, with 50% apparently coming from materials collected through the household recycling system including plastic packaging and mixed recyclables. Debatin says it aims to offer packaging solutions to healthcare customers for transporting laboratory samples and security packaging for national banks and other industries.
Earlier this year Darren West, Global Head of Circular Economy Solutions at software company SAP, discussed how the company can help with industry challenges including changing regulation, EPR fees and sustainable packaging design as part of our Sustainability Perspectives podcast. After turning its attention to solutions tackling ocean plastic pollution, the company developed the SAP Responsible Design tool to tackle packaging challenges.
