Amcor and Fedrigoni

Amcor and Fedrigoni have teamed up to develop ‘recycle-ready’ flexible packaging for wet wipes, said to be recyclable in PE recycling streams across Europe.

The new packaging combines Amcor’s AmPrima Plus flow wraps and Fedrigoni’s semi-rigid label in a wet wipe pack designed for the home and personal care industry. The solutions aims to accelerate the sector’s transition to recycle-ready packaging in line with regulations such as the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to reduce packaging waste and make all packaging on the EU market recyclable by 2030.

The mono-material solution seeks to deliver potential savings in EPR fees, reduced plastic usage and a reduced carbon footprint for brands. Apparently, the wet wipe packaging has been certified as recyclable by Recyclass and cyclos-HTP.

The companies say the pack’s composition allows brands to reduce their packaging weight by up to 15% when compared to traditional, multi-material packs with a rigid label. Calculated by Amcor’s ASSET life cycle assessment technology (certified by The Carbon Trust), the new pack is said to have a lower carbon footprint by up to 55%. The packaging design also has a reported EPR fee reduction of up to 35%.

In related news, Australian-based brand Conserving Beauty announced in January that it would be using Futamura’s renewable and compostable NatureFlex films in the sachet packaging for its dissolvable cleansing wipes. The films are reportedly produced from renewable wood pulp, harvested from responsibly managed plantations and meet all the relevant standards for industrial composting.

The following month, industrial products manufacturer ROCOL refreshed the packaging for its SCRUBS cleaning products with a new ‘bold blue’ colour and a bucket made from 30% recycled plastic. SCRUBS wipes can be used for the heavy-duty cleaning of hands, tools and machine parts, as well as removing grease, oil, adhesives, tar, ink and paint, without the need for water.
