As part of our Sustainability Awards Finalist Interview series, we asked Orora Packaging Solutions about its Jarbot reusable packaging system, designed to enable reusable packaging scalability for consumer-packaged goods, nominated in the Pre-Commercialized Driving the Circular Economy category.
You’re a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2024. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarise your entry, in less than 50 words?
The Jarbot system is comprised of 7 stock keeping units (SKUs), designed to mix, match, and nest to create a scalable, reusable packaging system. These SKUs can be shared amongst brands to help fuel the circular life cycle of the product’s packaging. Customized PET shrink sleeves protect the reusable packaging and contents for one use cycle, then they are removed and recycled during the cleaning step in the closed loop.
Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about what is innovative about your project and/or about its impact on packaging sustainability.
Jarbot represents an evolution to the reusable consumer packaged goods (CPG) packaging on the market and addresses the challenges of scaling reusable packaging systems by standardizing container designs and making the design nestable for improved reverse logistics. The ability to share designs across brands will lead to market wide innovation and collaboration.
Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, e.g. how your innovation/initiative has been received by the industry, or what the next steps are in commercialization/product development?
We have received a lot of great feedback and interest in utilizing the Jarbot Packaging system with the select brands we have offered it to. Jarbot is not only a packaging product, but a circular system that requires a full network of logistics partners to transport, clean, fill, and replace the packaging and product. We are currently building that network of partners in order for Jarbot to be successful in city-wide, nationwide, and worldwide applications.
The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2024 will be announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place in Amsterdam on 12-13 November. The Summit mobilizes leaders of the FMCG value chain, policymakers, NGOs, recyclers and investors to collaborate, remove barriers and identify opportunities on the road to sustainable transformation.
