With SEE’s new retention packaging system, e-commerce and fulfilment companies are expected to meet demand for same-day deliveries while eliminating unnecessary void material.

The Sealed Air Korrvu Rapid Fix constitutes a cardboard frame containing at least 50% post-consumer recycled content, available in brown or white finishes; and a clear, ‘recycle-ready’ plastic retention film for positioning and displaying products. The pack can be customized via digital print, which allows brands to apply bespoke branding and run limited campaigns.

The retention system can be quickly inserted into an I-Pack tray in a high-speed, automated packaging system. This is expected to cut down on the manual processes and touch points required, which should boost productivity and remove the bottlenecks that prevent same-day shipping.

By utilizing this solution, operators are set to minimize their packaging by cutting down on void material. This is set to reduce a pack’s size and weight, and optimize space and mileage in transit.

Meanwhile, fulfilment companies can apparently achieve more sustainable and efficient processes, thus improving consumer satisfaction and boosting net promoter scores.

SEE recommends the packaging for various products, including homeware, toys, cosmetics, health and beauty, and small-to-medium-sized DIY tools and equipment. Its degree of recyclability depends on the product configuration, components intended for recycling, and the scope and availability of local recycling facilities, the company clarifies.

“Korrvu Rapid Fix replaces the need for manual void fill and cushioning, while still maximizing product protection,” explains David Masa, portfolio marketing senior manager at SEE. “The retention insert can be put in place in seconds, with its highly resilient low-slip film locking products in place to protect against shock and vibration.

“Risks of damage can be minimized during storage and transit, meaning there’s lower chance of orders being returned and companies having to pay refunds or cover the costs of replacements and redeliveries.

“Korrvu Rapid Fix can be seamlessly integrated into fulfilment lines to improve efficiencies throughout supply chains. It is quick and easy to set up and operate and requires no glue to suspend and protect products.

“Together with Sealed Air brand I-Pack, operators can benefit from an automated packaging solution that helps improve workplace safety and reduces resource requirements, allowing staff to be deployed to other areas of operation.

“The damage reduction performance of the retention system, combined with its sustainable properties and ability to optimise product presentation appeals to consumers. This helps to create a positive customer experience that can strengthen brand reputation and loyalty.

“Fulfilment companies are under increasing pressures to ship same-day orders. This requires high levels of packaging productivity and product protection to avoid the delays of bottlenecks and having to process damaged returns. Korrvu Rapid Fix has been developed to overcome these challenges.”

This announcement comes after SEE implemented new digital die-cutting capabilities for its Korrvu packaging. Lead times are set to lower from months to weeks; customers will no longer need to store excess packaging on-site as minimum order quantities decrease; and packaging can be customized by product, season, location, and customer without the need for physical tooling.

Amazon and Mondi also aimed to protect products by designing a paper-padded envelope with paper-based, shock-absorbent lining – a solution that would ultimately win a Sustainability Award this year. The pack’s open-flute padding helps it fold around the product’s shape and keeps it secure inside the mailer, thus negating the need for void fillers.

Additionally, Abriso Jiffy and BridgeInsight have designed Jiffy FlexiBag, a paper-based e-commerce pack designed to cut down on unnecessary packaging waste. Its expandable gusset stretches to fit the size of the product, while honeycomb cushioning helps protect the item in transit.
