Sitma has introduced its FlatPack automated paper-based wrapping solution for furniture panels, designed as a primary packaging system to replace plastic packaging in industrial production environments.

Developed in collaboration with a leading global furniture manufacturer, the company says FlatPack aims to enable furniture manufacturers to reduce plastic use without compromising packaging protection, operational continuity, or logistics efficiency. The system is said to deliver ‘compact and secure’ packs that reduce material usage and support efficient logistics through fit-to-size continuous motion primary packaging.

Apparently, the inward-folded wrapping allows for optimized palletization, improving space utilization and handling stability. FlatPack can also integrate complementary packaging operations within the same workflow, managing the insertion of instruction manuals and leaflets, the integration of hardware toolboxes or assembly kits and ensuring all product components are securely contained within the final package.

Sitma says that the solution ensures reliable product protection during storage, transport, and in-store handling while maintaining a clean and uniform retail appearance. Manufacturers can integrate product information, instructions, branding, and sustainability messaging directly onto the pack to reduce additional materials while enhancing customer interaction at the point of sale.

The company adds that FlatPack supports integration with existing packaging lines and its flexibility allows manufacturers to adapt to different panel sizes and production requirements while maintaining consistent performance.

In related news, international consortium and EU flagship project BIOWRAP has launched this month, aiming to develop and scale up PapairWrap - said to be the ‘first’ fully paper-based bubble wrap - to an industrial scale. The project consists of 14 partner organisations from Germany, Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark and Poland.

Back in May, Hershey’s Kisses and The Pokémon Company International partnered on a limited-edition foil wrap collection celebrating 30 years of Pokémon, featuring 151 Poké Ball foil designs and 10 new foils inspired by franchise villains Team Rocket. Earlier in the month, Pokémon fans could scan the QR code on each pack to visit a digital collection hub to track their finds, follow a ‘narrative-driven experience’ on social media platforms and enter for a chance to win prizes.
