MM Packaging Deeside has upgraded its fibre-based food tray, GreenPeel, with a new double-rim structure – a move set to improve strength, seal integrity and retail performance for fresh protein products.
Reportedly, GreenPeel uses up to 9-% less plastic than conventional plastic trays while maintaining the necessary performance for food manufacturers and retailers. Its cartonboard structure and removable liner are set to help brands meet plastic reduction targets without compromising on product protection, shelf appeal, or recyclability.
The tray is designed for end uses in the food sector, including meat, fish, chilled meals, and fresh produce.
Now GreenPeel’s single-rim construction has been replaced with a continuous double-rim structure to meet the needs of the protein sector. This format is expected to deliver additional robustness when used with skin-sealed products and maintain seal integrity throughout the supply chain.
MM Packaging has modified its machinery and tooling to suit the double-rim upgrade. The redesigned tray is currently available for protein applications, and further implementation across the GreenPeel range is in the pipeline.
“The move to a double-rim structure is a significant step forward for GreenPeel,” said Jonathan Craddock, UK Business development manager for GreenPeel at MM Packaging Deeside. “Customers want a stronger, more robust solution capable of maintaining a reliable skin seal throughout storage, distribution and retail display.
“By introducing the double rim, we’ve strengthened the tray without compromising any of the sustainability or branding benefits that GreenPeel already provides. It offers greater durability, particularly in demanding retail environments, while continuing to help food manufacturers reduce their reliance on plastic.”
“Innovation has always been central to our approach, and this latest enhancement demonstrates our commitment to continually improving GreenPeel in response to market requirements,” added Dave Whitworth, managing director at MM Packaging Deeside. “We’re helping food manufacturers make meaningful progress towards their sustainability objectives without sacrificing quality or functionality.”
In other news, Mondelēz International has just replaced the rigid PET trays for its flagship European cookies range with FSC-certified paper trays. The move is expected to remove 2,200 tonnes of virgin plastic per year, leading to a reduction of around 80% compared to the original plastic packaging.
Copacol has also packaged seasoned chicken cuts in a cellulose tray that can be placed directly in the air fryer. The pack is described as 100% recyclable and is believed to take approximately 75 days to biodegrade.
