Indian packaging company UFlex has commissioned its first overseas woven polypropylene (WPP) bag manufacturing plant in Mexico, with an annual production capacity of 80 million bags.

Established with an investment of approximately €45 million, the plant in Altamira, Mexico is apparently equipped with advanced European machinery that operates with ‘clean, low-noise and emission-free’ processes in line with the company’s global ESG commitments. UFlex says the plant features an in-house recycling unit and a zero solid waste discharge facility, designed to minimize waste generation and promote responsible disposal.

According to UFlex, the WPP bags produced at the site are engineered for greater strength, featuring precision hot-air sealing technology that can be adapted to a variety of bag sizes and specifications. The bags also incorporate mite-preventive laser venting technology that allows air to escape while preventing the ingress of mites.

The company states that the plant has an integrated converting facility incorporating sustainable water-based inks, which operates at speeds of up to 300 metres per minute. It also includes an integrated quality and environmental control laboratory to ensure consistent product quality and environmental compliance.

Commenting on the announcement, Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, president of Flexible Packaging and New Product Development at UFlex Limited, said:

“The commissioning of our WPP packaging plant in Mexico represents a strategic step in expanding our global manufacturing network and strengthening our presence in the Americas. The North American pet food packaging market, valued at over 12 billion US dollars in 2026, is projected to witness sustained growth while Latin America continues to emerge as a high-potential market driven by urbanisation, rising disposable incomes, and growing awareness of pet nutrition. This growth trajectory is driving demand for durable, hygienic, and sustainable WPP bag formats that can withstand the challenges of transportation and storage while preserving product freshness.”

In other bag packaging news, British company Modern Milkman claims it has become ‘the first company in the UK’ to introduce Treetop Biopak’s home-compostable bread bag to its customers, said to break down in around 12 months without leaving microplastics or pollutants behind. The new single-layer film is waterproof and can be disposed of in customers’ food waste bin or garden compost heap.

Raro International claims to have successfully engineered and patented a ‘completely circular matrix’ under its Raro Bags brand – the PABRIC material is said to be 100% plastic-free, 100% biodegradable and home-compostable, with an industrial-grade tensile strength capable of carrying up to 20kg without tearing. The bag also features a ‘100% natural organic’ adhesive that bonds the layers together, keeping the bag from peeling apart in wet or humid weather.
