Südpack has launched a recyclable, mono-material polypropylene (PP) flexible pouch aimed at the drinkable yoghurt market.
The company identifies the rapidly-growing yoghurt drink market as a key driver behind the launch of this new solution – the segment is forecast to grow from $4.6 billion to $6.7 billion by 2034. Europe is one of this sector’s key sales regions; currently accounting for 30% of the global market.
Conventional formats such as PET bottle and cups are still the dominant packaging format in the yoghurt drink market at 44%, but Südpack reports that flexible pouches are the fastest growing format.
Südpack says that flexible solutions in this space are easy to open, securely reclosable, and mess-free – they can be squeezed almost completely empty and are comparatively easy to handle.
The material used for this specific product, CarbonLite PurePP, is based on polypropylene. Reported benefits include proven sealing performance, secure spout integration, leak tightness, reliability, and “excellent machinability.” According to Südpack, the solution offers the same shelf life as more commonly-used alternatives.
The company also says that its new product can be mechanically recycled within the PP recycling stream, due to both the body of the pack and its spout being made of PP. The solution apparently achieves a recycling rate of “more than 95%.”
Meanwhile, Südpack’s internal calculations reportedly show that the “CO2e footprint per square meter of a PP-based spouted pouch with a film thickness of 111 μm is more than 40% lower than that of a 103 μm PET/aluminum/PE laminate.”
