SealTrust has published a live demonstration of an item-level digital product passport that it claims ‘any reader can verify’ end-to-end in around 10 seconds, anchored on a public chain.

The company says the passport can be verified from a phone without needing to install an application. The public chain is said to enable journalists, competitors or auditors to confirm the document has not been altered since publication without contacting SealTrust or being granted access to a private system.

The passport gathers materials, components, suppliers, substances of concern and repairability and exports as JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data (JSON-LD) using GS1 vocabulary. SealTrust adds that it implements four access tiers so that a consumer, a repairer, a recycler and a market surveillance authority can each view the level of details the ESPR framework intends for them.

The company states that every item carries a GS1 Digital Link QR code for volume lines or a NTAG 424 DNA chip for high-value pieces. The chip version permanently records when the pack is opened and travels to the consumer page, meaning a refilled or re-sealed pack looks different to an untouched one.

SealTrust says each chip holds a key that exists only for that chip, derived from its own identifier following NXP application note AN10922. Apparently, every scan is verified server-side and encoded NFC samples can be sent to editorial teams that test products physically.

“The thing brands keep asking us is what happens to the record if we disappear,” commented Nordine Bouchelia, co-founder of SealTrust. “That question deserves a real answer rather than a promise, which is why the proof sits somewhere we do not control and the passport can be verified against us.”

Back in May, research from Amazon revealed the complexity of navigating registration rules across EU Member States and advocated for online marketplaces playing a role in providing the necessary data. Amazon identified 64 unique registration fields across ten EU countries, with each nation requiring an average of sixteen fields.

The article examined how companies can increase the visibility of their packaging after use, with additional contributions from Amcor and Nestlé.
