Sainsbury’s plans to save 20.2 million pieces of plastic every year by introducing kerbside recyclable paper packaging with bamboo netting across its own-brand avocado twin packs.
An initial trial will take place across 77 Sainsbury’s supermarkets, in which selected superstores will offer the by Sainsbury’s Ripe & Ready Avocados twin pack in paper packaging with bamboo netting. Apparently, the solution is plastic-free and fully recyclable at kerbside.
If the trial is completely successfully, a further in-store and online rollout is expected to take place later in the year.
“Switching to paper packaging across our Ripe & Ready Avocados twin pack is one of the many steps we are taking to fulfill our commitment towards a greener future,” said Claire Hughes, director of Product and Innovation. “The initiative reflects our continuous efforts to help develop more sustainable and innovative packaging solutions and we’re excited for our customers to try out the new packaging in-store.”
Other sustainability efforts from Sainsbury’s include the introduction of its ‘Good to Know’ logo, which guides consumers towards sustainability-minded packaging or components, including those with reduced plastic packaging.
The logo is displayed on such packaging redesigns as the recyclable cardboard trays for its own-brand chicken and fish lines – intended to save 694 tonnes of plastic every year – and Graphic Packaging International and Moy Park’s paperboard tray, introduced to the retailer’s private-label breaded chicken in hopes of reducing 72% and 82% of plastic per tray.
In a similar move, Tesco is trialling a recyclable cardboard container for its own avocado products, and removing barcode stickers in favour of laser etching product information directly onto the fruit. This is expected to save up to 25 million plastic trays and nearly a million stickers.
It is also working with Zespri, Smurfit Westrock, and ProPrint Group to create a kerbside recyclable tray and linerless lid solution for kiwi packaging – a design intended to replace plastic flow wraps.
