Origin Materials has partnered with Matrix Bottling Group – a supplier for Nestlé, Snapple, and other brands – to distribute thermoformed PET bottle caps, aiming to improve recyclability and increase recycled content.

Under the new agreement, Matrix will supply its bottling and capping services for PET caps manufactured by Origin – starting with 28 mm caps, then expanding into other formats.

These products will be launched among its customer base. Matrix’s clients have previously included Nestlé, Snapple, Minute Maid, Voss, Glacéau Vitamin Water, and Kirkland Signature, among others.

Instead of traditional injection or compression moulding, Origin manufactures its PET caps through a thermoforming process. They are designed for use in food-grade applications and can reportedly contain 100% post-consumer recycled material.

Apparently, the caps help to lightweight beverage bottles, improve product barrier, and extend a drink’s shelf life.

“For the packaging industry, this partnership represents a significant step forward for the mass adoption of PET caps and mono-material containers,” said Baze Melamed, director of Sales at Matrix Bottling Group. “It made sense to bring together our capabilities and customer base with Origin’s PET cap, a remarkable innovation driving recyclability and packaging performance. We are thrilled to partner with Origin.”

“Brands already need to work with their bottling partners to switch to PET caps,” added Origin Materials CEO John Bissell. “By partnering directly with progressive bottling companies like Matrix, Origin will remove a potential barrier to adoption and make it even easier for brands of all sizes to switch to PET closures.

“We are delighted to partner with Matrix Bottling Group, initially in Las Vegas, Nevada, and with potential synergies at each of its multiple state-of-the-art U.S. locations.”

The companies collaborated on a bottling trial in Q4 2025, and expect to conduct customer qualification trials and product runs from 2026 onward.

The partnership comes after Origin joined forces with Royal Hordijk Packaging have teamed up to mass-produce PET bottle caps for the food, personal care, pharmaceutical, and horticultural sectors. Together, the companies sought to streamline recycling and promote circularity among Hordijk’s customer base.

In other news, Amcor and Spadel have customized a tethered cap for the premium water brand Wattwiller. The closure is made of HDPE and designed for recyclability with PET bottles; it is also intended to help consumers with limited dexterity, including the elderly and the disabled community, open and close the bottle.
