Amcor and premium pet food brand Ge Wu An have unveiled Li Kou, an inverted cup designed to help consumers transfer wet food into a bowl in one clean piece.
Li Kou was developed to overcome the common frustrations associated with serving wet pet food from aluminium cans. These include broken pull rings, sharp edges, and food residue left inside the packaging.
The format comprises a polypropylene cup body, top lidding film, and bottom seal film. Described as the format’s ‘key differentiator’, this bottom seal allows consumers to peel, invert, tear and lift the entire meal into a bowl, with no extra scooping or scraping required.
Additionally, the cup-and-film structure is considered a lightweight alternative to aluminium cans, as it is said to use less material per unit and lower product weight in transit.
“The development of this new product was driven by real pain points that pet owners face every day,” said Liu Mengru, brand lead at Ge Wu An. “We wanted to completely optimize the experience from opening to serving — so pets get complete nutrition and owners spend less time cleaning up, raising the everyday feeding experience from the ground up.”
Amcor and Ge Wu An came together through Amcor’s Catalyst innovation platform and developed Li Kou over more than a year – combining Ge Wu An’s knowledge of the wet pet food market and its consumers with Amcor’s packaging know-how and development capabilities.
“Through Catalyst, we work alongside customers from the earliest stages of development to turn ideas into commercially viable packaging solutions,” added Jessica Chen, marketing and product management director, Amcor Flexibles China. “Li Kou demonstrates how packaging innovation can help pet food brands differentiate through the consumer experience, from how a product is opened to how it is served.”
The development comes after Amcor’s collaboration with jams and preserves brand Tiptree to use certified 30% post-consumer recycled films for its shrink films and pallet stretch wrap. The move is set to help the brand prepare for upcoming UK Plastic Packaging Tax changes while maintaining logistics packaging performance.
In other news, UPM Specialty Materials and Royal Vaassen have developed a high-barrier paper packaging solution for pet food treats and snacks. Said to be PFAS-free and recyclable, the pack is designed to meet the strictest requirements including aroma, grease, light, moisture and oxygen barriers.
