PET recycler Enviroo and plastics recycling authority RECOUP have announced a ‘comprehensive validation’ of the PET recycling market and plans to build a PET plastic recycling plant in the North West of England.

The funding of the PET plastic recycling plant was supported by RECOUP, which worked with Enviroo on the PET market validation. This included cross-referencing and confirming third-party industry reports, assessing market feasibility, and compiling a central repository of intelligence around waste management trends and recycling policy.

Enviroo states that providing essential market due diligence led to the securing of £58m in funding. The first facility is set to be operational by 2027 and is expected to process up to 35,000 tonnes of plastic annually at Peel NRE’s £165 million Protos Plastic Park at Ince Marshes, near Ellesmere Port.

Enviroo’s facility aims to boost local circular economy efforts by recycling PET plastics into high-quality food-grade packaging materials. The project hopes to reduce plastic waste, support the UK’s net zero ambitions and create sustainable jobs in the green economy.

In related news, Veolia revealed it is investing £70 million (€81,227,650) into a closed-loop, tray-to-tray PET recycling facility – anticipated to process 80,000 tonnes of mixed plastics annually and result in new, food-grade packaging. The new facility will shred, wash, and flake PET trays and bottles from both domestic and industrial waste streams, with the further use of recycled plastic set to save up to 70% of the CO2 associated with virgin alternatives.

The European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) recently stated that it has become a liaison organization to the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN)’s Technical Committee – a move set to promote bottle-to-bottle recycling for PET in upcoming design for recycling legislation. EPBP hopes the collaboration will improve the recyclability and circularity of PET bottles to facilitate high-quality, bottle-to-bottle recycling across Europe’s PET bottle industry.
