Duni Group is due to provide plastic-free paper beverage cups for this year’s Vätternrundan cycling event, due to take place June 5th-13th around Lake Vättern in Sweden, as well as trialling a food and packaging composting solution.
Vätternrundan and Duni Group aim to reduce plastic use and enable more circular handling of food and packaging waste at the event, with the Group’s composting solution set to be tested at the Jönköping depot to manage food and packaging waste on site.
Duni Group is expected to supply approximately 125,000 paper cups at the event, designed for high volumes and fast-paced environments. At the Jönköping depot, where around 12,000 meals are served, the Group says it will provide compostable packaging and a composting machine from Duniform.
Apparently, the packaging is designed for local composting and enables both food and packaging waste to be handled in a unified flow on site. The material can then be transformed into nutrient-rich soil within approximately 24 hours.
Vätternrundan and Duni Group state they hope to develop more sustainable and resource-efficient solutions for large sports and recreational events. The collaboration is initially set to span three years and create opportunities for the long-term development, testing and scaling of sustainable solutions.
In other paper packaging news, Ekoroll has developed a lid-free paper cup for hot and cold drinks, featuring an integrated lid and drinking spout alongside a water-based coating for recyclability and compostability. The design is also hoped to align with upcoming revisions to the Plastic and Plastic Waste Regulation, and to help customers avoid taxation for plastic packaging components.
Startup Borro recently stated it has raised €1.3 million from investors to expand its digital deposit system for reusable cups further into the Netherlands, Germany and France this summer. Borro adds that ‘millions’ of cups have already been processed through its system, currently active at Belgian football clubs such as Club Brugge and KV Mechelen.
