Bacardi and ecoSPIRITS have agreed to continue a collaboration that aims to integrate reusable and refillable dispensing systems across the former’s vast alcoholic beverage portfolio.
The agreement seeks to build on a partnership that extends back to 2023, when Bacardi says it became the first spirits company to introduce a concept like this for the cruise industry. Since that time, the company reports that this project has eliminated more than 130,000 single-use glass bottles and removed more than 82,000 kilograms of packaging waste.
The new licensing agreement means that Bacardi will have access to ecoSPIRITS’ full product portfolio, including ecoTOTE, SmartPour, ecoPLANT and the CircularONE software platform.
Bacardi’s goal for this project is to prove that circular packaging can operate successfully in high-volume cruise environments without affecting quality or operational performance. In a press release, the company also referenced a “growing interest in reducing reliance on single-use glass and moving toward more circular solutions.”
A closer collaboration between the two companies on technical aspects is also expected. A recent example of this is the development of the ecoTOTE 3.0SC Cruise Edition, which Bacardi had direct involvement in. The ecoTOTE aims to replace single-use glass bottles on cruise ships by holding roughly four bottles-worth of beverage, and can be used around 100 times – reportedly reducing the usage of single use packaging by 95%.
The reduction of packaging waste across Bacardi’s product portfolio, which includes brands like Bacardí rum, Patrón tequila, Grey Goose vodka, Bombay Sapphire gin, and Martini vermouth, is a core part of ‘Good Spirited’, its corporate sustainability program.
