The winners of the German Packaging Award 2019 have been chosen. 34 innovations and the best solutions from Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Sweden came out on top.
Under the patronage of the German Federal Minister for Economics and Energy, an independent jury of trade associations, companies, trade and research examined and evaluated submissions from 14 countries.
The 34 winners of the German Packaging Award have once again stretched the boundaries in packaging for industry and trade, consumers and the environment. They show packaging in perfect symbiosis with the packaged goods, intelligent and creative ways to reduce packaging effort, use of innovative technologies and materials, craftsmanship, storytelling and high-quality, attention-grabbing designs with attention to detail.
Among the 34 award-winning innovations are solutions made of corrugated board, cardboard and wood, plastic, glass and metal, for food, drinks, cosmetics, medicine, industrial goods, logistics and FMCG. There were winners in each of the categories: sustainability, packaging machines, presentation of goods, new materials, logistics and material flow, economic efficiency, design and finishing, functionality and convenience, as well as in the young talent category.
Dr. Bettina Horenburg, Member of the Executive Board and overall responsible for the German Packaging Award at the German Packaging Institute e. V. (dvi), is delighted with the quality and diversity of the solutions submitted: “Year after year, companies from the packaging industry prove their high innovative strength and spirit. In 2019 they not only confirmed this but further accentuated it. We would like to thank all participants for their excellent work. The strong field of participants with so many persuasive solutions did not make it easy for our jury, but that makes the 34 winners shine out all the more. All the winners are presented in detail on the German Packaging Award website.”
According to Bettina Horenburg, the dvi was also struck by just how important sustainability is at the German Packaging Award: “Sustainability is clearly a key focus of current innovation activity. This applies to all competition categories, industries and materials. We see many remarkable innovations that are using recyclates, those that ensure the recyclability of packaging with foresight and consistency or are reducing overall packaging and material amounts and costs. Solutions made of monomaterials are rapidly on the increase. In addition, new materials and means are being found which is making packaging ever more sustainable.”
Award ceremony and Gold Awards
The festive award ceremony is a special industry event with industry VIPs on the first afternoon of the FachPack trade fair in Nuremberg. “We would like to cordially invite all industry members and interested parties to the award ceremony. We will introduce the winners and present them with their trophy and certificate. We will also reveal the closely-guarded secret of who will win the coveted Gold Packaging Award,” announced Bettina Horenburg. The Gold Award is presented by the jury to further honour winning innovations that uncover important answers or break new ground in a particularly unique and emphatic way. The dvi invites you to the award ceremony on 24 September 2019 from 4:00 pm onwards in the Munich Hall of the NCC Mitte at NürnbergMesse. Participation is free of charge but register in advance is required on the German Packaging Award website.
Strengthening the young talent section
For many years now, the German Packaging Award has offered pupils, trainees and students their own competition category, which once again this year honours three remarkable innovations with an award. In a drive to further strengthen the promotion of young talent in the industry, the dvi, in cooperation with the Otto Hänsel Foundation and the VDMA’s Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association, is integrating the Prize of the Otto Hänsel Foundation for the first time. This prize is awarded for the best diploma thesis and the two best student research projects in the field of processing and packaging technology. Dr. Ralf Otto Hänsel will present the three prizes in the presence of representatives of the Foundation Board. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens-Peter Majschak, Head of the Processing Technology Division of the Fraunhofer IVV and holder of the Chair for Processing Machines/Processing Technology at the TU Dresden, will present the prize winners and give a brief synopsis of their subject matter.
