ComforLid SA interview

Constantia Flexibles’ ComforLid is a finalist in this year’s Sustainability Awards, nominated in the Climate category and said to deliver up to 43% lower CO2 emissions cradle-to-gate. We spoke with the company to find out more about this solution.

You’re a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2026. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarize your entry in less than 50 words?

Constantia Flexibles’ ComforLid is an aluminum/PP lid with an integrated drinking opening. By combining low carbon aluminum with downgauged structures, it delivers up to 43% lower CO2 emissions and enables approximately 25%** plastic savings compared to standard market cups by eliminating the need for plastic lids or straws.

Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about its impact on packaging sustainability.

Low Carbon Aluminum is still relatively new to the market, creating a valuable opportunity to further reduce the carbon footprint of aluminum packaging. Compared to standard market cups, ComforLid can reduce plastic use by up to 25% across the entire packaging unit.

ComforLid demonstrates that packaging can remain highly functional while significantly reducing material consumption through effective downgauging. In addition, it is a very hygienic drinking solution for on-the-go beverages such as iced coffee. The drinking opening stays protected by the aluminum lid until the product is opened, helping to keep the contact area clean until consumption.

Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, for example how your innovation has been received by the industry?

Highlighting our commercial success, ComforLid reached sales of 300 million units across Europe in 2025. Our innovation has received significant industry recognition, winning the Green Star Packaging Award in the Beverages category, followed by three WorldStar Awards for Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Packaging Materials and Components, and the Special Award - Sustainability (Gold).

The winners of this year’s Sustainability Awards are due to be announced on the 11th November at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place from the 10th-12th November in Utrecht, Netherlands. The Summit mobilizes leaders of the FMCG value chain, policymakers, NGOs, recyclers and investors to collaborate, remove barriers and identify opportunities on the road to sustainable transformation.
