Helicot SA interview

Ahead of the Sustainability Awards 2025 taking place in Utrecht this year, we spoke to Veritiv about its Helicot Paper Tube, said to be recyclable, compostable and biodegradable, nominated in the Pre-Commercialized Recyclable Packaging category.

You’re a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2025. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarize your entry, in less than 50 words?

The Helicot Paper Tube is a recyclable paper packaging solution made from over 80% paper and biodegradable PHA. Designed to be recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable in various environments, this innovative packaging provides a sustainable alternative to plastic, filling a crucial gap for circular packaging in the health and wellness market.

Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about what is innovative about your project and/or about its impact on packaging sustainability.

The judges recognized the Helicot Paper Tube for its seamless integration of sustainability with functionality. By using recycled paper and biodegradable PHA, it offers a scalable solution that addresses the critical challenges of plastic waste, supporting both the circular economy and environmental impact reduction across the product’s lifecycle.

Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, e.g. how your innovation/initiative has been received by the industry, or what the next steps are in commercialization/product development?

The Helicot Paper Tube has already generated significant interest from brands looking to enhance their sustainability initiatives. As we continue refining the product, we’re focused on achieving third-party compostability certifications, scaling production capabilities, and driving industry adoption to establish this solution as a standard in the health and wellness sector.

The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2025 will be announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place in Utrecht on 10-12 November. The Summit mobilizes leaders of the FMCG value chain, policymakers, NGOs, recyclers and investors to collaborate, remove barriers and identify opportunities on the road to sustainable transformation.
