In our latest Finalist Interview ahead of the Sustainability Awards - taking place at the Sustainable Packaging Summit in Utrecht this November - we spoke to Beontag about its entry in the Pre-Commercialized Driving the Circular Economy category; its UHF RFID food packaging tag, said to be microwave and dishwasher compliant.
You’re a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2025. Congratulations! To start off, could you summarize your entry in less than 50 words?
Carrier eWave is Beontag’s durable UHF RFID tag for food packaging. The tag is microwave and dishwasher compliant, making it ideal for reusable containers. The sustainable tag enhances traceability and boosts supply chain efficiency while delivering strong performance and read range via its compact antenna.
Why do you think the judges were impressed with your entry? Tell us about what is innovative about your project and/or about its impact on packaging sustainability.
We believe the judges were impressed by Carrier eWave because it offers an innovative solution to an ongoing need in packaging, which is to demonstrate how smart technology can directly advance sustainability in our everyday lives. As noted above, this RFID tag has extensive features, including being both microwave and dishwasher resistant, characteristics that enable reliable tracking in harsh environments without compromising usability.
Its compact design and reliable read range make it ideal for integration into returnable food packaging such as cups, bowls, and containers, supporting circular economy practices in food service and logistics. Finally, these features are compounded by improved traceability, enabling enhanced asset management while reducing single-use waste.
Finally, can you tell us about the ongoing development of your project, e.g., how your innovation/initiative has been received by the industry, or what the next steps are in commercialization/product development?
The Carrier eWave has been very well received by industry stakeholders, particularly in sectors like food service, logistics and retail where durable, reusable packaging is a growing priority for companies and customers alike. Partners have praised its ability to maintain RFID performance through multiple dishwasher cycles and harsh conditions, which has opened new opportunities for smarter, more sustainable supply chains and inventory management.
Building on this momentum, our next steps include scaling production and customizing solutions for specific packaging formats. We are also engaged in further R&D to extend compatibility across a wider range of materials and environments, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable innovation in packaging.
The winners of the Sustainability Awards 2025 will be announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place in Utrecht on 10-12 November. The Summit mobilizes leaders of the FMCG value chain, policymakers, NGOs, recyclers and investors to collaborate, remove barriers and identify opportunities on the road to sustainable transformation.
